Next to love, democracy is the strongest force at play, when it comes to keeping a society sound, strong and vibrant.
But just as love can be blind, so does democracy have its own potential flaws and implicit weaknesses.
Democracy does not by default produce fair, optimal decisions and development roadmaps for the country and the citizens.
There is a risk that imbalance breeds more imbalance. The rich will not on own initiative vote for better distribution of wealth. And the poor will not vote for lower company taxes or lower minimum wages. Not without considerable persuasion from people they believe in, at least.
And this is the achilles’ heel of the democracy. A successful democracy is deeply dependent on informed and knowledgable voters and trust-relations rooted in sincere and loyal politicians. And on top of this, if everything else fails, trust in that the systems build in mechanism of checks and balances will take over, if things start to move sideways, between the elections.
It is a specific objective, not to incline to judgement of character or specific persons, and domestic affairs are domestic affairs . But as a general comment, I will say this:
If the topics and the decisions made, concerns only country internal matters, then that should be handled though the relationship betweee politicians and the population. This could be related to taxes, distribution of wealth, healthcare for all, abortion laws etc. No other country should have any mandate when it comes to that. People vote, and then get what they asked for.
4 years is a long time, so people should at least pay utmost attention to who is fighting for the country and who is fighting for their own gain. And then make sure that the next time around is better off. You get what you give, and if you live in a democracy, there is no one else to blame than the voters - which means ourselves.
That said, we are living in a global economy, and in a closed ecosystem, and what that implies is that breakdown in one part of the world, most likely will impact other countries around the globe. So politicians have an obligation to not only ensure the local growth, but also at the same time make sure that this growth is not build on other countries defeat or harm.
Domestically or globally - We grow together or we wither together. It’s as simple as that.
Why do we need to reduce the CO2 emissions. Why is it a disaster that the Amazonas is disappearing in fire and smoke. Why is nuclear power the means to an end - in the negative sense of the word. Why is the raising global temperature a thread to the existence of life. Why is the weather behaving as it is. Why do we need to recycle. Why do we have to worry about biodiversity, for animals that we are not even planning on eating, or keeping as pets.
And why should you care.
If you care about your future, you should care. If you care about your health, you should care. If you care about anyone else than yourself, you should care.
There is no guarantee that political statements, talk, money and private interests will mitigate historical wrongdoings nor prevent decisions and initiatives that can potentially derail our future prosperity and living conditions.
Initiatives for the sake of personal gains, at the cost of damage to others, are appalling. Opinions are interesting, at best. Decisions and solutions for the common good, based on facts, is what we need. And you are a key player in getting us there.
You don’t have to be a scientist, to make a difference. You don’t have to understand all the details either. You simply need to have basic knowledge about some of the key topics, in a limited number of science domains.
Start today. Spend 5 minutes each day, learning new stuff. Within a few months, you will feel that something has changed. You will recognize that your points of view are shifting. You will start having heartfelt opinions about matters that previously didn’t bother you at all. You will feel changed - for the better. And you will use this new insight to make better decisions for yourself, and for your community.
You can do it !
Before you eat, make sure you understand what’s at stake.
Even if you get lucky and avoid diabetes, blood vessel diseases and cancer, what you eat can still destabilize your local environment, lead to global starvation and it might eventually suffocate you.
Which of these will hit you first, depends on a lot of factors, but rest assure that it will happen before the end of this century.
Unless we do something about it - today!
Some of the consequences are given by nature, and is not to be influenced by the ingenuity of humans to come up with solutions and inventions - because it’s simply unavoidable. Weather systems, ecosystem stability and the atmospheric balance between oxygen and carbon dioxide. These mechanisms are extremely complex and intertwined on a global scale. At the same time, they are both easy to mess up, and impossible to control if tilted off balance. And the impacts of that are unpredictable, but most likely devastating for all parts of the society, globally.
And what you eat, has impact on these conditions, even through you didn’t intend that to happen.
The only way to prevent this is, if you, me, our friends and neighbors, and all our fellow beings around the globe start changing our mindset, change attitude and change behavior.
You can chose to close your eyes and pretend this is not happening, and argue that the Titanic Earth will alway endure and prevail.
And from an egoistic point of view, if you are old, you might argue that it’s not gonna happen in your lifetime, so you don’t care.
But if you have kids or relatives, or simply have a heart and a conscience, you understand that we, as humans, simply cannot allow self destruction to become the destiny of the civilization. We should be too good to let that happen.
The good news - is that you can benefit both your health and your future by simply start acting differently. But you have to do it wisely, and to do that, you must take it upon yourself to understand a bit about the ins and out, the facts and the fake statements.
Seek knowledge and input from unbiased sources. Shun news channels and propaganda that deliberately manipulates you. Vote for politicians that represents values such as ecology and sustainability, and appears to have the guts to put their hand where their mouth is.
Unfortunately, the history shows that Politicians are not to be trusted. Politics and large corporations agendas tend to go hand in hand.
At the end of the day, your strongest weapon is your feet. Money makes the world go round, and your shopping, spendings, investments, contributions and selection of services determines the make it or brake it for global enterprises. Your money is like a driving wheel. You have influence in where we are going from here.
Spend them wisely.
Coming soon.
